GRAY AMBER
(animal raw material)

Physeter macrocephalus L.

Ambre gris - collection Charabot

Grey amber is an animal substance coming from a pathological secretion in the intestines of the sperm whale. Its obtention in no way endangers the animal as it can be found floating on the ocean's surface or simply along the coastline. The perfume industry uses it as a trace, like musk or civet, to fix or exalt other perfumes which might be too delicate or fleeting. It is too expensive to be used in soap.

Origin

Sumatra Isles, Madagascar; along the coasts of America, Brazil, China, and Japan.

Fabrication

Through a 3% gray amber alcohol infusion.

Odor

Warm, animal, characteristic, reminiscent of tobacco's smell.

Applications

> Perfume : but often replaced by synthetic substances because of its elevated cost.
