Castoreum is a gland in the castor secreting the
liquid which renders its fur waterproof.
Origin
Hudson Bay, Siberia.
Fabrication
Still not too long ago, castoreum pouches were treated using alcohol
infusion but
also alcohol or benzol extraction
in order to obtain an absolute essence or resinoid. Alcohol extraction
produced a 45 to 75 % yield and Benzol extraction produced an 18
to 25% yield. Today, this technique is challenged by chemical synthesis
which perfumes just as well.
Odor
Warm, strong animal scent.
Applications
> Perfume : All perfumes and especially leathers, amber , and
chypre . The cost is too expensive for it to be used in soap.
