Marguerite Gérard's collaboration with Jean-Honoré Fragonard ended in the last years of the eighteenth century. At that time, she abandoned large outdoor scenes for intimate interior paintings. Although she would still use a conventional landscape as a background from time to time, she restricted herself to a small world of her own, focusing on a room or comfortably furnished salon where she was inspired by a familiar, pleasant or sentimental repertoire.
