FRANÇOIS-MARIUS GRANET
(Aix-en-Provence, 1775 - 1849)
Showing a gift early on for line and color, François-Marius Granet
studies drawing at Aix-en-Provence with Constantin. Around 1793-1794,
he works with Faurius Saint Vincens for the Historical Monuments
Inventory : among the findings are views of the Montmajour Abbey
and the Saint-Trophime Cloister... There he develops a special appreciation
for ancient architecture and ruins.
In 1802, he leaves for Rome, visiting the Piedmont region, Naples,
Assisi, Tivoli, Viterbo, Florence. He spends almost 20 years in
Italy, meets his wife there, and returns only a few times to France,
whether it be to Aix-en-Provence or Paris. The landscapes
of Italy, the light and the colors he encounters amaze him.
He paints many cloisters, monasteries, church
interiors, and crypts...He especially likes these atmospheres
of introspection and the chiaroscuros offered by the interiors of
underground churches. From then on he is referred to as "the painter
of Capuchins". Back in France, he continues painting these religious
sites as well as landscapes and ruins.
He likes Italy and Provence above all. Besides, Parisians refer
call him "the priest of Provence". He never really adjusts to the
capital, where he works, first in David's studio, then on his own,
exposing in the Salons. He decides late in life to take up history
painting. In 1849, he dies at home in Aix-en-Provence, in the blockhouse
he had purchased while still in Paris.
