Shadow box

Nineteenth century, Rajasthan

Inv. 02 694

This wooden box was used as a make-up box for the tikka, a mark worn on the forehead by most Hindus. The tikka is prepared with dried turmeric and lime juice, for the red; boiled sandalwood for the white; or ash for the grey. When it wasn't used to bring luck, it indicated the religious affiliation of a man or the marital status of a woman.
