"Rustic Amusements" pleated fan

Early 18th century - gouache on paper and mother-of-pearl

Museum of the Art and History of Provence - donation by Pietresson

Inv. 2012.0.2482

The Museum owns a fine collection of fans from the 18th and 19th centuries. Different types of fans, which may be slatted or pleated, are illustrated by themes as varied as they are charming. Drawings were generally made with gouache on sheets representing mythological, historical, romantic or pastoral themes.

This pleated fan shows a romantic scene on the obverse side and a medallion decoration on the slats. The reverse side is less decorated, as was customary, and reveals a light floral decoration and monograms.
