Pediment of a Gallo-Roman funeral monument

Provence, 4th century - limestone

Museum of the Art and History of Provence - Cabris, Moustayret district

Inv. 97 483

A rare example of monumental sculpture from the fourth century in the Alpes Maritimes region, this pediment comes from the Moustayret district in Cabris, where is was reused in a stone wall. This era, which was the time of an architectural and sculptural renaissance in the provinces of the Roman Empire, had very little impact in the Alpes Maritimes, where all the large monumental groups had been destroyed and where the Romanization of the inland was more or less unknown.

Borrowing from the iconography of sarcophagi, the effigy of the deceased has been given a heroic representation. Two cupids representing souls carry the deceased to the world beyond.
