Jean-Honoré Fragonard Villa-Museum

The stairwell

05 June 2014 / 17h45

Listed as a Historical Monument, the Villa Fragonard stairwell features a monochrome glue-size painting, probably a shared work by Jean-Honoré Fragonard and Alexandre Evariste, his son. The painting contains architectural elements in trompe-l’œil, republican motifs, figures from Antiquity, such as Ceres and Minerva, and Masonic symbols, probably included in the decoration at the request of Alexandre Maubert, a member of the Saint-Jean-de-la-Vraie-Humanité lodge in Grasse. In two medallions, we can observe the portraits of Robespierre and Abbé Grégoire.
