Plate with grotesque decoration

Mid-17th century - faïence from Moustiers

Museum of the Art and History of Provence - donation by F. Carnot

Inv. 2012.0.2220

Probably created by Olérys, this decoration, known as a grotesque, was the most-imitated one from Moustiers. The plate is in the characteristically asymmetric Louis XV style. Imaginary, fantastic and sometimes humorous figures brimming with vitality are arranged on the terraces.

Fired at a high temperature, this plate features a monochrome and manganese "Chinese-style" decoration.
