Portrait of a Woman

1764 - oil on canvas

Museum of the Art and History of Provence - donation by F. Carnot

Inv. 97 574

The Museum exhibits numerous portraits of women from the nobility or local bourgeoisie. This one is probably of Madame du Saillant, sister of the Marquis of Clapiers Cabris. This half-length painting shows a young woman wearing a grey dress scattered with red flowers and featuring a square neckline and ample sleeves in lace; her headdress is made of knotted ribbons. She also wears jewellery, most notably a medallion with a man's portrait on her wrist. She holds a closed fan.
